Maryland Couple Makes Beautiful Objects From Recycled Circuit Board | USA | English

Maryland Couple Makes Beautiful Objects From Recycled Circuit Board | USA | English

June Soh | Gaithersburg, Maryland

It's said that one person's trash is another's treasure.  That is certainly true for Debby and Joel Arem.  Twenty years ago, the couple started creating jewelry and office products from recycled computer circuit boards. Today, they have a full line of "green" products.

There is no shortage of recycled material for Debby Arem's creations. She uses everything, from pieces of scrap metal and electronic components, to computer circuit boards and chips.

"In 1992, my husband had a company that made computers. And I saw a circuit board for the very first time in my life and I went out of my mind.  I said that is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen with all the intricate circuitry and the colors. And the first thing that came to my mind was you could make jewelry out of that,” Arem said.

Arem has a degree in fine arts - so that's what she did.  She and her husband Joel founded a company called Three Ring Circuits and introduced their jewelry and other products at a local craft show.

“The first night we sold out of our clipboards, completely sold out. People would come by the booth and do a double take and they would say, that is a circuit board from a computer? Oh, what a clever idea,” Arem said.

Their line of products has grown. The Arems use discarded prototype circuit boards as the base for most of their products. Then they add vintage beads, small pieces of metal, and anything else they find interesting.

“If I hadn’t rescued them or if we hadn’t rescued the circuit boards from these companies, they would have ended up potentially in a landfill or had been burned,” Arem said.

Circuit boards recovered from cell phones are popular.  "I come up with ideas many times but I can’t quite figure out how to engineer it.  And Joel is a master at taking an idea that I come up with and figuring out how to actually put it together,” Arem said.

They say working together for 20 years has strengthened their marriage.

"You get to know a person a lot better when you spend that much time and overcoming not only the challenges of the relationship but the stress of business really puts the strain on a relationship.  If you can get through it, it [marriage] gets stronger,” Joel Arem said.

“We have a lot of fun, we really do.  I don’t consider this work. That's the best part of it," said Debby Arem.

These days, instead of traveling to craft fairs, the Arems sell online. That way they can spend more time in their home studio, meeting the increasing demand from around the world for their creations.

Ruby Red Slippers Fail to Meet $2 Million Reserve at Auction | GreatestCollectibles.com

Ruby Red Slippers Fail to Meet $2 Million Reserve at Auction | GreatestCollectibles.com

Ruby Red Slippers Fail to Meet $2 Million Reserve at Auction

The 1939 Ruby Red Slippers did not sell on December 16 2011. The slippers were consigned to Profile In History auction with a minimum reserve of $2 million.
Ruby Red Slippers Do Meet $2 Million Reserve
Ruby Red Slippers Do Meet $2 Million Reserve
For months the shoes made headlines and attracted a lot of collectors and investors attention as they are considered big ticket items in the collectibles industry.
Estimates were being given that the slippers would fetch up to 5 million. However in the end the Ruby Red slippers failed to meet the opening bid reserve of $2 million. In my opinion the slippers are probably worth $1.5 million since they didn’t sell.
Apparently there were several pairs of Ruby Red slippers used in the original 1939 movie The Wizard of Ozz. However, today only four pairs are known to exist.
Ruby Red Slippers Do Meet $2 Million Reserve
Ruby Red Slippers Do Meet $2 Million Reserve
The Smithsonian is the custodian of one of the pairs. The Smithsonian personnel indicate that the Ruby Red Slippers are one of the most popular items in their museum attracting millions of people a year. The shoes have been loaned to the Smithsonian for over 30 years.
This particular pair of shoes was loaned to the Smithsonian for many years. The owner is Kent Warner and his pair of Ruby Red Slippers are marked # 7 on the inside of the shoes. Whats very neat about the slippers is that they display scuffs on the insoles of the shoes providing strong clues that these # 7 specific shoes were used in the close up of the Wizard of Ozz movie when Dorothy taps her shoes three times.
Other significant items in the sale that did not sell were the Cowardly the Lion Suit used in the same movie. The reserve price was also set at $2 million with no bids high enough to meet the reserve.

Hunting for Vintage - Small Towns vs Big Cities

Hunting for Vintage - Small Towns vs Big Cities

Since moving from a big city to a smaller town, not too small, it has been quite a challenge to find those pieces, those items of clothing I KNOW WILL SELL fast. It is an instinct - even though it doesn't stop me from buying other items because either I like them or they will look good in the shop. Obviously, a gal living in LA or NYC has a huge advantage over little ol' me, in Santa Fe, NM. But I still go to THE Goodwill and THE Salvation Army every week. About once a month I drive an hour to Albuquerque where the really really great stuff is. At the big Goodwills, I go through every single item, spending 3 hours or more searching and searching. I have found some amazing items. Even I have been shocked by what I have found. I never know what I am going to find. But I search and I search and I find!  I have been to enough thrift stores in Dallas to know how they are different then they are here. And there is not much difference but the cost, ironically. Dallas thrift stores have much cheaper price tags. Here is the difference:  $3.00 for a dress vs $9.00 for a dress in Santa Fe. $6.00! That is a lot (as I sit here wrapped in a mink blanket. Go figure.
I believe that I can find just as great items here as I can in a bigger, richer city, I just wouldn't have to try as hard. Don't get me wrong, when I see ALL those amazing and beautiful vintage clothing shops on Etsy, I get a little jealous. But I can promise you that when it comes to the hunt, I have to dig a little deeper, get a little dirtier, and exhaust a lot more energy. I am not saying that they do not work as hard or harder at buyer vintage clothing, but you must admit, there is an advantage. But after spending 3 - 4 hours in a thrift store  - you learn a lot. I can pick out the vintage, it might be really ugly, but I can do it with my eyes closed. It is all worth it. I will go through an entire row of dresses and find one that makes it all worth while. And I love it. Impulse Vintage is my baby, my passion, my motivation to get up everyday. But watch out! Dallas here I come! In 5 days and counting….it's on!

Thrifting 101: An interview with Pamela of Market Publique, the online vintage marketplace
Among my many duties as community outreach manager and social media kingpin (ha, ha) for the Texas Style Council Conference is creating content for the TxSC blog. So along with writing posts for Dress With Courage, I've been posting for that blog as well. It's no wonder I've been so busy!

I had the privilege of interviewing Pamela, founder of Market Publique, for the TxSC blog, and I've decided to include the interview here as part of my Thrifting 101 series. I was fortunate to meet Pamela in New York City this past fall, and trust me when I tell you that few people are as knowledgeable about thrifting and vintage as she is. As founder of Market Publique, the online marketplace for vintage clothing and accessories, Pamela is smart, stylish, and incredibly down to earth.

Dior, Dignity and Natalie Portman

Megan Rosker

On Oscar night, Natalie Portman went vintage. Standing on the red carpet she looked stunning in a classic fifties red and black polka dot, strapless, Dior dress. The dress is from Rare Vintage on 57th street in New York City and is an actual 1954 spring couture dress. Ms. Portman was honored to borrow it for the evening (it's a $50,000 dress) and wear such a rare and beautiful piece of historical fashion.
What does it mean when one of our leading ladies gracesthe Hollywood night of the year in vintage couture? While many others were looking to head up best-dressed lists with something unprecedented, alluring or classic, Portman bypassed the line of women waiting to be ranked and judged from hair to toe. No one can judge a vintage Dior dress. It's historical fashion. It resides far outside our current standards of beauty. It doesn't need Portman and she didn't need it. The mere history of such a dress resides independently of any woman who puts it on. It could be hanging in a museum and we would find ourselves transfixed with its rich charm and design.
Unlike many women who dress for the Oscars, Portman clearly felt confident that her talent and her presence was enough. She didn't need her dress to speak volumes about the quality of her acting or herself as a person. The woman who chooses vintage has nothing to prove. She stands in her own dignity and so does the dress. When she finds herself wrapped in haute couture, she is immune to current trends and instead embraces a class and dignity that simply cannot be found in a garment that has not yet withstood the test of time.
I admire a woman, like Portman, who can so bravely stand equal to her clothes. We need more examples like Portman's in fashion because too often women fall into the trap of thinking fashion is meant to enhance what we don't feel confident about. In truth fashion is an art form in which each article of clothing can stand independently of the wearer. Each piece has its own history, inherent beauty and worth. Equally true is the fact that the wearer has her own inherent and independent beauty and worth. A woman with this recognition moves with a grace and dignity that a person who yearns to prove themselves through style simply doesn't have. A woman who truly embraces this dignity embodies those qualities no matter what she wears.
Therefore, it is not imperative that she chooses a dress that shoots to the top of every list or makes fashionistas swoon. She can dress quietly and with dignity and know that her talents speak for themselves. It no longer becomes about proving anything to anybody. It truly becomes a very mature relationship with fashion.
